Does Anything in the World Have No Taste?

A little story for a curious mind

Once upon a time, a little child named Ayan sat in the kitchen watching his mother cook. He saw sugar, salt, spices, fruits, and vegetables going into different dishes. Every single thing had a flavor. Sweet, salty, sour, bitter, or spicy.

Ayan wondered, “Is there anything in this world that has no taste at all?”

He ran to his grandfather and asked this strange but interesting question.

Grandfather smiled. “Ah, that is a very clever question. Let me tell you a story.”

The Day Ayan Tasted Water

Grandfather handed Ayan a glass of water.

“Drink this and tell me what it tastes like.”

Ayan drank it and said, “Nothing! It has no taste!”

Grandfather nodded. “Many people say that. But water actually has a very, very light taste. So light that your tongue almost cannot notice it. Pure water is almost tasteless, but not completely.”

Ayan’s eyes grew wide. “So even water has a tiny taste?”

“Yes,” Grandfather said. “Our tongue is just not sensitive enough to notice it clearly.”

The Air We Breathe

“Now,” Grandfather continued, “what about air? Can you taste air?”

Ayan opened his mouth and breathed in deeply. He shook his head. “No taste at all!”

Grandfather laughed. “That is the closest thing to truly tasteless. Air has no taste because it doesn’t touch the taste buds in a way that creates flavor. It just passes through.”

Ayan thought, Maybe air is the answer!

What Is Taste, Really?

Grandfather explained, “Taste happens when tiny particles from food mix with saliva in your mouth and touch your taste buds. If something has no particles, your tongue cannot taste it.”

“So if something has nothing in it… it has no taste?” Ayan asked.

“Exactly!”

The Invisible Things

Grandfather pointed around the room. “Light has no taste. Sound has no taste. Thoughts have no taste. Love has no taste. Time has no taste.”

Ayan giggled. “You can’t put those in your mouth!”

“Right,” said Grandfather. “Anything you cannot touch or eat cannot have taste.”

The Final Answer

Ayan sat quietly and thought very hard.

He realized something amazing.

Almost everything you can eat or drink has some taste — even if it is very faint. But things that are invisible, like air, light, sound, and feelings, truly have no taste because they are not made of material you can taste.

Grandfather smiled and said, “So, my child, the answer is this:

Everything that is made of matter has some taste. But things that are not matter have no taste at all.

Ayan felt proud. He had learned something new from a simple glass of water.

A Little Thought to Remember

Next time you drink water or breathe air, think about this question. The world is full of wonders, and sometimes the simplest questions lead to the most beautiful discoveries.

And who knows? Maybe you’ll ask the next curious question that makes everyone think.
