Pythous publishes articles on history, religion, mythology, mystery, science, technology and health, plus free online tools. This page explains how we try to get things right, and what our content is and is not.
Accuracy and sources
We research every article before publishing it and list the sources it relies on at the end, so you can check them yourself. We prefer primary sources (in translation where needed), peer-reviewed research, and the work of recognised historians and scholars over secondary websites. Where sources disagree, or where the evidence is thin, we try to say so in the article rather than present one version as settled fact.
Even so, mistakes happen and knowledge changes. We make no guarantee that any article is complete, accurate or current. If you find an error, please tell us which article and what is wrong, ideally with a source. We review every correction request and update the article when we were wrong.
Religious history and beliefs
Many of our history articles cover the Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions, and the early Islamic period. These accounts draw on the Quran, the major hadith collections, and early historians such as Ibn Ishaq (via Ibn Hisham), al-Waqidi, Ibn Sa'd and al-Tabari, alongside modern scholarship. Most of these works were written down a century or more after the events they describe, and Sunni and Shia traditions sometimes remember events differently. Where that matters, we try to note it.
These articles are written for general readers as history. They are informational, not sectarian, and they are not religious rulings (fatwas) or a substitute for guidance from qualified scholars of your own tradition. Honorifics such as (AS), (RA) and ﷺ follow common usage and are not a statement of sect. In keeping with Islamic tradition, we do not show images of the Prophet, his family or his companions.
Articles on other faiths and on mythologies (Hindu, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and others), and on atheism and comparative religion, describe beliefs as their followers and scholars describe them. Describing a belief is not endorsing or attacking it. We aim to write about every faith, and about readers of all faiths and none, with respect.
Wars, battles and violence
History includes wars, massacres and executions. We describe them because they happened and because they explain the past. Describing violence is not approval of it, and nothing on Pythous is meant to promote, glorify or incite violence or hatred against any person or group.
Mystery and unexplained topics
Our mystery articles cover legends, unexplained phenomena and fringe theories. We try to keep what the evidence shows apart from what has only been claimed or guessed. Including a theory in an article does not mean we believe it.
Not professional advice
- Health. Our health articles on health.pythous.com are general information only and are not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or another qualified health professional about your own health, and before starting, stopping or changing any treatment, medicine or supplement.
- Science and technology. Our science and tech articles and guides explain how things work. Configuration and security guides are examples; test them in your own environment and follow your organisation's policies before using them on real systems. We are not responsible for loss of data, downtime or security issues that result from following them.
- Money. Articles and tools about interest, savings or currency are educational, not financial or investment advice.
- Tools. Our calculators, converters and world clock give estimates. Check anything important (exchange rates, dates, time-zone rules, health figures) against an official source.
External links
Our articles link to other websites, mostly sources and further reading. We choose them because they are useful, but we do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement of everything on that site. We are not paid for any link; see our Affiliate Disclosure.
Images
Photographs from other sources are credited to their owners and used under their licences. Illustrations are labelled as such; illustrations of historical places and events are artistic interpretations, not historical records.
