Comment Policy

Last updated: November 1, 2026

Comments are open to signed-in readers so you can ask questions, add context, and point out mistakes. We moderate comments to keep the discussion useful and respectful, especially on articles about religion and history, where readers come from many faiths and traditions.

Welcome

  • Questions about the article and its sources.
  • Corrections, ideally with a source we can check.
  • Disagreement, including with us, when it addresses the argument rather than the person.
  • Extra context, personal experience and further reading.

Removed

We remove, without notice, comments that contain:

  • Hate speech: insults or attacks on people for their religion, sect, ethnicity, nationality, gender or other identity, including sectarian abuse.
  • Harassment and threats against authors, other readers or anyone else, or calls for violence.
  • Spam: advertising, self-promotion, repeated posts, and links whose main purpose is promotion.
  • Off-topic content that has nothing to do with the article.
  • Personal information about anyone (phone numbers, addresses, private messages) shared without consent.
  • Illegal or explicit content, or content that infringes someone else's copyright.
  • Impersonation of another person, author or organisation.

Accounts that repeatedly break these rules lose the ability to comment and may be closed, as set out in our Terms of Service.

Corrections in comments

If a comment points out a real error, we fix the article and may note the correction. For anything you'd rather not post publicly, use the contact page.
